Glen's latest album is truly a 'Masterpiece'. Just nominated for the 2012 Reggae Grammy Award, this one hits us as an exceptional album, with the songs all working together with the same feeling and messages.

Very refreshing when most 'albums' are just collections of singles, the production on this one is consistent with the same real instruments, players, and production throughout giving it a very cohesive vibe.

A great collection of the Rasta songs of praise, songs to give inspiration, and sweet lovers tunes to set the mood when you are with your special someone.

The first song to be released 'Fall On Me' - was featured on the ZIon High productions compilation Jah Golden Throne. Rodigan was playing this tune tough when it first dropped. A laid back roots sound, it reminded us of the messages and vibes the music had 15 years ago when we started Solomonic, instantly earning a place in the box and has been warming up dances ever since.

The first time I got this album it took me almost 4 hours to listen to it, because I kept pulling up the songs through the whole thing! Very hard to pick my favorites, but I would say 'There is a Joy', 'Take Away The Whip', 'When We Pray', 'My Vision', and 'One Way' are the ones I keep going to.

A classic Rasta anthem revisited

Really excited about this one. When Mikey dropped this tune on Xterminator in 1997, it was a huge influence in the Solomonic Sound System trod to Rastafari. Even us 'foreign' raggamuffin youth who had been called by the teachings of His Majesty, decided to grow locks, and be self reliant instead of bowing to Babylon - could easily identify with this tune.

Historically, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica have not shared the unity that Caribbean people should aspire to. In fact, both countries have engaged in petty rivalries which have served to do little more than divide their people further. The recent musical collaboration between two of the countries' reggae singers, Mikey General (Michael Taylor) of Jamaica and Khali (Khalfani Taylor) of Trinidad, however, serves as an example of the love and unity between the two Caribbean nations.

Brought together by their shared Rastafarian faith, both Taylor Bwoys have united their vocals on a revived version of the Rastafarian anthem, 1997 Exterminator hit, Ms. Taylor Bwoy. Given their shared surname and their shared experience in finding Rastafari, the track was an obvious choice for the collaboration.

Produced by Good Vibes Entertainment, a newly founded production house which is also the result of the collaboration between both Taylor Bwoys, the song is a true representation of the greatness that is known as Jamaica's reggae music history. Recorded and mixed by Anthony 'Al' Graham at the island's famous Cell Block Studio, the single boasts of an all star musical cast, Kirk 'Kirkledove' Bennett on the drums, Donald 'Bassy" Dennis on the bass and guitar and Paul 'Wrong Move' Crossdaleon the keyboard. Mastering work was done at the one and only Tuff Gong Studio by Mastering Engineer Gary Sutherland. Vocally the track is led by the Taylor Bwoys, but top vocal performer Paul 'Lymie' Murray also lends his talent to the single in a most melodic and harmonic manner. A video for the song is currently in production.

When asked about the purpose of the collaboration, both Taylor Bwoys agree that it was within the fulfilment of their divine purpose. "Give thanks to Jah for these moments that I will cherish for eternity." Those were the words of Khali Taylor when asked how he felt about the project, whilst his Jamaican counterpart, Mikey, can be quoted as saying, "I am very pleased with the quality of work, and Give thanks to Jah for sending the brother my way".

So it seems that similarly to the smash hit original version which was released in 1997, the remake promises to follow the same path, the path of success. Already a hit within the Rastafarian Nation on the island, it seems only a matter of time till the song spreads to the streets, the dancehalls and the rest of the Caribbean on a massive scale. The Taylors are hoping that the project will serve as an example of the Love of Rastafari and the Strength of Unity. An example that they hope their respective nations will take heed of and observe, but just as it is in every other story, we will have to wait for time to tell it.

Paying respects to the original dub pioneers and foundations of reggae music, Jahson has built a mix of modern day dub reggae, digital dub, uk steppers, and dubstep. With the Bass Culture party in Vermont, he introduced this blend of sounds to the massive for over 2 years... However during that time, the genre known as DubStep also morphed into a commercial soulless bastard stepchild commonly known as BroStep. Fed up, he decided to do something about it and laid out the plans for a musical assasination.

When the mix was done, the idea came up to do a twist on the cover art from the rare classic dub album 'Scientist Rids the World of the Curse of the Evil Vampires'. Rootz Underground is a six-member reggae outfit from Jamaica that has been making waves on the global scene since 2008. "Enlighten Me" is originally a song of social commentary from their local perspective, found on their second studio album entitled ‘Gravity’. It marks the first of many tracks pending to step over into the underground dance world. No other re-mixer or producer would suit such a positive step forward than Rob Paine. Rob has been not only integral in the development of the band, but also blessed with the skills and accolades to please both the reggae and the dance music worlds, which he has done from day one of his career. This is the second jointly produced release Rob has done with Charles Lazarus, who is also the lead guitarist of the band. Rob once again shows that Charles certainly can take us by surprise and in a direction slightly different than one the band normally takes with its roots reggae based sound.

Whether you instantly jam to it or you're not too sure what to do with it, the duo know you'll find “Enlighten Me” intriguing. We recently discovered another brand new artist that has the right vibes to carry the culture banner forward.

Kabaka Pyramid's debut EP (Download for free on bandcamp) features 10 tracks of tuff roots sound with a bit of jazzy and hip hop spice to it. Not so much that it sounds like the watered down international pop sound that permeates most Jamaican production nowadays, but a fresh take on updating the classic roots sound.

Much of the production is sample based, so I feel like I am hearing the roots of hip hop again - with a new generation sampling the previous classics and blending them into a brand new someting.

Message wise, we are treated to a selection of positive cultural brain food, and lyrically this youth will have your head spinning as you take it all in.

I almost feel like I am listening to Black Star's first album, but from the perspective of a concious roots reggae Rastafari artist in Jamaica.

Favorite tracks are "The Sound", "Prophecy", and the tune for the empress's "I Alone" - which if given a chance on commercial urban radio would be a instant crossover hit.

The project is produced by Bebble Rock, with promotional support from Indiggnation - Protoje's band and marketing team...

We are definitely looking forward to hearing more from this soldier!

Rob has just returned from a week in Kingston. We are colloborating with Rootz Underground once again on their official album mixtape. The first one that we dropped was a dubplate-dancehall-session of their first LP - MOVEMENT, remixed on top of the current culture riddims of 2007/2008, with nuff special guests nicing things up.

This one changes the pace a bit, as we incorporate classic dancehall and digital riddims into the mix. Rootz was also very excited about this one, and had a different take on it in the studio, having a bit more idea of what to expect from the session. Jamaica remains one of the poorest nations in the Western Hemisphere, so two Philly dub/reggae institutions — Solomonic Sound and Worship Records — are throwing a Reggae Christmas Party this Wednesday at Silk City to help collect toys for the less fortunate children of Jamaica. Yes, we’ve got major problems here in the U.S., but that shouldn’t preclude us from lending a helping hand to those in other countries when we’re able. Okay, sorry for the preaching — I’ve just heard the “argument” from a few people this past week that we should say “screw the world” and just take care of our own, and it kinda pisses me off. "...The scant commercial radio airplay roots music receives presents further challenges in taking it beyond its core audience. One Jamaican act that's using other methods of getting its music heard is six-member outfit Rootz Underground, which recently released its debut, "Movement" (Riverstone/Mystic Urchin Records). The band has concocted several cyber strategies in its pursuit of a global audience, including online distribution of the "Movement Mixtape," the band's collaboration with Philadelphia's Solomonic Sound System.

"Basically we revoiced tracks from 'Movement' on popular riddims in dub-plate style and then built them into a mix with other dubs from popular artists," Rootz Underground guitarist Charles Lazarus says. "We created a download link, blasted it on our Facebook, MySpace, imeem, Hi5 sites and recruited friends who run similar sites or blogs to push the download. In three days we had over 1,000 downloads, and it grows every day..."

IT WAS obvious that a concerted effort was put into Saturday night's launch of Rootz Underground band's debut album, Movement.

Not only were the sponsor's buntings prominently displayed on the fences near the entrance to the Shell Bandstand, Hope Gardens, but there was a sense of good organisation from coordinated parking on the outside to free ital soup on the mound in the natural amphitheatre inside.

It was a concerted effort for a concert-style launch, which attracted a fair-size audience, clips of the band doing interviews in the recording studio, their music videos and on tour in the United States shown on huge screen at the back of the stage before they performed.

Revisiting the journey

During that near one-and-a-half hour performance, the band's lead singer, Stephen Newland, thanked those present for coming along with the band on an eight-year journey. Judging by the size and enthusiasm of the audience, there are many who have been on the trek. And before they delivered songs from the 19-track album, including Time Is An Illusion, Herb Fields, Victims Of The System, In The Jungle, Special Place and Corners Of My Mind, as well as a cover of Marley's Midnight Ravers, the video presentation covered points on that journey.

The band's members are Newland, Charles Lazarus (lead guitar), Colin Young (bass), Jeffrey Moss-Solomon (rhythm guitar/ vocals), Leon Alexander Campbell Jr (drums) and Paul 'SCUBI' Smith (keyboards/organs/vocals).

So the music videos of Victims of the System and Hammer were shown, two members describing Rootz Underground as "the expression of the sum of all our expressions" and "the coming together of a group of friends musically".

A musical movement

Wayne Armond, who produced Movement, said, "When I met Rootz Underground, I thought they were a cool set of youths. I did not take them seriously until I heard their songs. When you hear Rootz's songs, you can't help take them seriously."

And, in examining the significance of Movement as the album's name (there is no track by that name on the set), one band member called it a "musical movement", among other things, adding "there are a lot of things in movement".

In the video clip, Armond had said "from you start trod as a group of minstrels you need followers. And Rootz Underground definitely has that", one member saying "our live show is our signature".

And when the music started, it was clear that both statements were correct, the chemistry among the band's members evident and Newland making many a trademark leap, although as time went on, at points, the energy output seemed a bit stilted.

The Solomonic sound system played rockers before and after the Movement launch concert, Claudette Powell introducing the band.

Rootz Underground band in performance

With a skank and demeanor similar to that of Reggae Icon Bob Marley, it's evident Rootz Underground front man Stephen Newland, with the help of his band, has major plans to secure a spot in the history of the reggae Movement.

Last Saturday fans turned up at the Hope Gardens Bandshell for the much anticipated release of Rootz' debut album, Movement, and were treated to a thrilling reggae composed ride.

Taking centrestage, to the harmony of Time Is An Illusion, Newland greeted his audience and then simultaneously broke into song. Swinging his shoulder length locks, devoid of inhibition, Newland's voice echoed throughout the venue, while his fellow band members rocked - playing their instruments - visually into the vibe.

By the time the band launched into songs such as Hammer and Victims of the System they had the ample crowd mystified by their aura, with some singing their tunes word for word.

"This band is good, and I suspect their following is just going to continue to grow," said visiting Caymanian resident April General. The band's strong stage presence continued with a stirring rendition of Fade Away .

"Is everybody feeling good?" Newland asked before commencing Slumberland, after which it was announced that, as previously advertised, Wayne Armond of Chalice and Dean Fraser would no longer be performing due to previous engagements. But even with the announcement of Armond and Fraser's absence, the crowd was not perturbed and seemed to be more interested in hearing more from Rootz Underground.

With a cover of Bob Marley and the Wailers' Midnight Train, Newland removed his long sleeved jeans shirt to reveal a black merino and really got the crowd moving with In the Jungle.

Abruptly finishing their set and exiting the stage, the Rootz Underground mesmerised audience demanded more, chanting, "We want more Rootz Underground," until the band came back and continued to fill their fans' reggae fix with a few more songs.

"Thank you so much for coming to this album launch," expressed Newland just before for the last time existing the stage. "Dem boy yah a di real deal, and I feel like I just watched the early stages of something that is going to be big in the future," declared a patron while existing the venue, "Something big!"

As one of the only modern day bands in Jamaica, Rootz Underground is the ultimate live music experience, similar to the reggae jam bands of the 70s and 80s (Bob Marley and The Wailers, Steel Pulse and Third World). Their fresh fusion of musical genres and beautiful instrumentation has scored them #1 hits and a devoted fan base in their home of Jamaica. Now the band sets sail to tour the United States with Gregory Isaacs and perform at this year’s South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, TX.

Before recording their debut release Movement, the band steadily performed throughout Kingston, Jamaica in an attempt to get recognized. This past weekend the band rocked the country’s largest reggae event, the 27th Annual Raggamuffin Festival in Long Beach, CA, and heads north to tour with the renowned Gregory Isaacs. September 28th @ Fluid saw the matchup between SOLOMONIC & STRIKER out of Long Island NYC.

due to weather and a first time travelling to Philly they did not reach the club until almost 1:30 am (clash done at 2am).

in the meantime STEREO CHOICE stepped up to the task @ 1am and we clashed them for a few 10 min rounds until STRIKER got there.

the clash then proceeded with us & STRIKER battling out a 5 min round each.

the night then ended with a Dub fi Dub between all 3 sounds.

no winner was declared due to the unexpected turn of events, however stay locked right here for news of the pending rematch with STRIKER!

Big up Marlon Hype STEREO CHOICE for stepping up to the challenge to give the night some clash vibes that the crowd was there for.

Philly dancehall soundsystems Federation and Solomonic just teamed up for a great new mix CD of dubplate showdowns. Sure, the WOW! factor is heavy - each of the 68 tracks is an otherwise unavailable dubplate, which means you get everyone from Sizzla to Damian Marley to Bounty Killer doing DJ-specific voicings of their biggest hits (and rhyming "Max Glazer" with "lazer"). But even without the exclusivity, any mix that hits you with "Police In Helicopter", Stalag riddim, and Gyptian's "Serious Times" is going to be a keeper. Plus, our dude El Feco is all over it, even doing a "Lets get ready to rumble!" intro. A must-cop from the city of brotherly love.
